Los Angeles, CA – July 12, 2010 – Angry at the slow response of both BP and the federal government to the Gulf oil spill disaster, environmental activists have put a new twist on charity fundraising with the first-ever “F-Bomb-A-Thon” that’s raising both eyebrows and funds to help Gulf non-profits. The F-word-filled viral video from UnF–kTheGulf.com features a cross section of people from across the U.S., ranging from a 4-year old child to an old woman, using the forbidden four-letter word to take BP to task. The no-holds-barred clip shows people wearing a black T-shirt that reads “UNF–K THE GULF” and cutting loose on BP in a way that millions of Americans only wish that leaders, from the president to news anchors, had the guts to do. The T-shirts are sold on the group’s website for $13 each, with $5 going directly to four Gulf wildlife rescue and environmental charities. The site allows the public to vote on how the funds are spent.
Video producers Luke Montgomery and Nate Guidas hope to raise at least $25,000 from T-shirt sales to directly help causes including oiled wildlife rescue, clean-up volunteer mobilization, green energy advocacy and a lawsuit to stop BP’s new exploratory oil drilling.
Luke Montgomery says, “BP’s oil spill has really f–ked up the Gulf. Our video and charity T-shirt are here to help unf–k it. There’s a lot of anger out there and people need to vent about the destruction but we also need to have a laugh at BP’s expense. The video and T-shirt are all about using some negative language to do something positive. We’re going to clean up the Gulf one dirty word at a time.” Nate Guidas adds, “We got tired of seeing oiled birds on TV and yelling at the screen so we created this video to allow people to yell back at BP. It’s both therapeutic and funny to see people, including an 11-year old and some old ladies, go off in an F-bomb-laced tirade about the spill. We’re using a bad word for a good cause.”
While some may find their approach offensive, Montgomery responds saying “What’s truly offensive is not a four-letter word but the lack of response from the federal government, dolphins blowing oil out of their f–king blowholes and BP blocking reporters from the beaches they f–ked up.” Guidas adds, “Our video shows people calling it like they see it and the T-shirt let’s people do good and look good doing it. Who knew that by putting on a T-shirt you could be helping take oil off of birds and sea turtles?”
Organizers have sent free F-word-emblazoned T-shirts to several celebrities including notorious White House F-bomber Rahm Emanuel, the inspiring and angry James Carville, clean-up guru Kevin Costner, BP CEO Tony Hayward, and “drill, baby, drill” advocate Sarah Palin. The video producers are focusing heavily on word of mouth to spread the video from friend to friend and using social media including Twitter and Facebook to build support.
